MS search service problems

I have a SQL 2000 sp3a (8.00.818) server running on W2K3 that cannot run the
MS Search service. The executable is present but when I checked for the
catalogs, the "Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\FTDATA" folder was
empty. I have one other SQL server with the same exact problem. Any ideas on
how this might have happened?
More importantly how do I reinstall MS Search without reinstalling SQL
server entirely?

jjMSSearch lives in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\MSSearch\Bin
To verify it is working issue a net start mssearch from the command prompt
and see what you get.
I suspect that it is not installed.

When I try a netstart I get: "System error 3, the system cannot find the
path specified."
So how do I reinstall it?
