MS SQL vs free Databases

Hello

I need to write an application which must use a database system as a backend, but i have not choosed which one to use. MySQL and PostgreSQL has all the features i want. the most important is database performance. anyone has an idea which database performs faster?

thanks in advance

Well, since you're on the MSDN forums, I'll go ahead and recommend the obvious: try SQL Express or MSDE :-)...|||

Hi,

well SQL Server Express is very powerful, fast, and has rich features. There are normally other conditions that have to be kept in mind while decideing, but if you ask people in a MSDN group, I would say go the Express Way :-)

-Jens Suessmeyer.

http://www.sqlserver2005.de

|||

If you are writing an app from scratch, I'd say you are by far best of using .NET development on a SQL Express platform. You are dealing with the latest and most efficient development platform, the most supported platform, and one that is expandable down the road. And it is cheap to get in at entry level

If you hit a home run, you want to at least have the option of scaling up and up all the way to SQL Enterprise with failover clustered servers.

I don't dream too big, do I? ;-)

|||

A major consideration for your choice of database should include not only features and performance, but the development environment. You really need to consider the OS, programming languages, and tools that you want to use. If you have developers who are proficient with Microsoft technologies (i.e., .Net) then SQL Server is an obvious choice. SQL Server and .Net provide everything you need and there is a ton of documentation, sites, books, webcasts, etc. ad nauseam.

PostgreSQL is powerful and interesting. It supports many languages (C, PL/Python, PL/Perl, PL/pgSQL), but development in the open-source environment is a radical shift from the widespread commercial support of MS or Oracle. You will need to be very proficient at coding many things from scratch, finding open-source tools and support sites, etc. Also, while learning PostgreSQL, I found that it's backup and recovery features were years behind Oracle. So, if your application will be enterprise class, you need to closely examine backup and recovery and high availability features. If your production database goes down, "who you gonna call"? (BTW, there are lists you can subscribe to to get email support from the PostgreSQL developers, but it's not "official" support like you get with MS or Oracle.) Check out www.postgresql.org as a starting point. I cannot recommend highly enough the PostgreSQL Bootcamp at www.bignerdranch.com.

I don't know Jack about MySQL.

Good luck and choose wisely!

MS SQl server2000 Restoration

Perhaps the database was corrupt before you backed it up? Can you run
DBCC CHECKDB on the source database, and back it up again? Are you using
SQL Server native backup commands to do this or an external component
such as Litespeed? Very occasionally, external components can corrupt a
backup file.
It sounds like the database was corrupt before you backed it up, and
then it can't restore it.

MS SQL Server 2k standard - insuffient system resources or memory

Hi,
I have sql 2000 with sp3, on w2k with sp4. It has 3 GB RAM. I haven't set u
p the maximum memory for instance, so they are defaults from 0 to 3072 mb.
My former server worked fine.: It was sql 2000 no sp, on w2k with sp2. It ha
d 1 GB RAM.
I had't set up the maximum memory for instance, so they are defaults from 0
to 1024 mb.
and that worked fine.
My 3rd party programs are finnish accounting programs and they give me very
much error and other conflict messages. I have already checked out everythin
g from setttings and I don't believe it could be any collation problem or so
mething.
I am now wondering what happens when there's no limits of the memory usage.
Will sql use over 2 gb though it can't and give problems after or does it re
alize limits?
Does anyone know?Standard Edition of SQL Server 2000 will not use more than 2G.
It's easy to confirm this with Performance Monitor. What errros are you
getting?

Thanks to your replys. I did the following steps:(1) I reinstalled the SQL2kServer and instead of "default" i entered my instance name "microa". (2) in the MSDE2000RelA i installed a new instance name like "micro9". (3) in the upgrading MSDE2000 Sp4 i entered setup /upgradesp sqlrun INSTANCENAME=micro9 /L*v C:\msdelog.log
All the above setup was completed, now i will run into SQL and will let you know the status. Thanks again for your valuable time.

Please let me know
Best Regards

MS SQL Jobs

Hi SQL Guru's

I am trying to run a job on Multiple SQL Servers in a domain.I am setting the job on my system,but the Radio button "Target Multiple Servers" is disabled.How do I enable the radio button "Target Multiple Servers".
Please let me know if this is possible.

Best Regards

SK.you have to ensure that your machine is a master and that you have
registered servers to be targets.

Right click sql server agent -- Multi Server Administration -- Make this a master.
During this process you will be asked to create a MSX operator. and to enlist targets. the targets will need to be pre-registered with your master's instance and then define the jobs on the master and then you will be able to target multiple servers.

understand that this process is designed to return all job history to the master so you can check the progress of job operations from one place. however, just as with the highlander, there can be only one.... meaning that a target cannot be a master for other servers.

:confused: and dont forget to check books online,

MS SQL (online) - Access(offline) system

Hi everyone,

I 've built an application which runs on a ms sql Database, now my employer want a offline database system as well. I've already implemented Access, but having difficulties with something.

I was creating a form to transfer all data from the sql database to the access database, when I experienced a problem in my first (access) data accessor. Sql gave a syntax error, when I copied the sql string with some test data to Access it obviously gave the same error but afterwards focussed on the DataTime field of my sql string. So I'm assuming the problem lies with that.

Is there a difference between the DateTime in SQL Server and Access? If so is there a way to convert from one to the other?

My SQL test string:

Code Snippet

INSERT INTO dbo_tblPerson(ID,Name,Surname,Email,Website,Address,Country,Comments,DateTime,Telephone,Mobile,Active)
VALUES (1,To,Vdb,info@.,www.,str,BE,Test,Date.Now(),0474,0474,0)

My Data Accessor:

Code Snippet

public static int addPerson(clsPerson oPerson)

{

try

{

string sSQL = "INSERT INTO dbo_tblPerson(ID,Name,Surname,Email,Website,Address,Country,Comments,DateTime,Telephone,Mobile,Active) ";

sSQL += "VALUES (@.ID,@.Name,@.Surname,@.Email,@.Website,@.Address,@.Country,@.Comments,@.DateTime,@.Telephone,@.Mobile,@.Active)";

int i = 0;

int iHigh = getHighestID();

clsDatabase.ExecuteSQL(

sSQL,

new OleDbParameter("@.Name", oPerson.Name),

createNullableParameter("@.Surname", oPerson.Surname),

createNullableParameter("@.Email", oPerson.Email),

createNullableParameter("@.Website", oPerson.Website),

createNullableParameter("@.Address", oPerson.Address),

createNullableParameter("@.Country", oPerson.Country),

createNullableParameter("@.Comments", oPerson.Comments),

createNullableParameter("@.DateTime", oPerson.DateTime),

createNullableParameter("@.Telephone", oPerson.Telephone),

createNullableParameter("@.Mobile", oPerson.Mobile),

new OleDbParameter("@.Active", i)

);

return iHigh;

}

catch (Exception ex)

{

return 0;

//System.Reflection.MethodBase oExceptie = System.Reflection.MethodInfo.GetCurrentMethod();

//clsLogging.logException(1, "addInput: " + ex.Message, oExceptie);

}

}

private static int getHighestID()

{

int iID;

try

{

string sSQL = "SELECT MAX(ID) from dbo_tblPerson";

try

{

iID = Convert.ToInt32(clsDatabase.ExecuteScalar(sSQL, new OleDbParameter[0]));

}

catch (Exception ex)

{

iID = 0;

}

iID += 1;

}

catch (Exception ex)

{

throw ex;

}

return iID;

}

private static OleDbParameter createNullableParameter(string sName, object oProperty)

{

OleDbParameter oPar = new OleDbParameter() ;

if (oProperty == null)

{

oProperty = System.Convert.DBNull;

}

oPar.Value = oProperty;

oPar.ParameterName = sName;

return oPar;

}

Tobias

Apparently the databasefield name 'DateTime' caused problems, so I changed it to 'dt'.
Getting a whole new problem, being "Data type mismatch in criteria expression." Can it still be the datetime value thing?

Code Snippet

public static int addPerson(clsPerson oPerson)

{

try

{

string sSQL = "INSERT INTO dbo_tblPerson(Name,Surname,Email,Website,Address,Country,Comments,dt,Telephone,Mobile,Active) ";

sSQL += "VALUES (@.Name,@.Surname,@.Email,@.Website,@.Address,@.Country,@.Comments,@.dt,@.Telephone,@.Mobile,@.Active)";

int i = 0;

int iHigh = getHighestID();

clsDatabase.ExecuteSQL(

sSQL,

new OleDbParameter("@.Name", oPerson.Name),

createNullableParameter("@.Surname", oPerson.Surname),

createNullableParameter("@.Email", oPerson.Email),

createNullableParameter("@.Website", oPerson.Website),

createNullableParameter("@.Address", oPerson.Address),

createNullableParameter("@.Country", oPerson.Country),

createNullableParameter("@.Comments", oPerson.Comments),

createNullableParameter("@.dt", oPerson.DateTime),

createNullableParameter("@.Telephone", oPerson.Telephone),

createNullableParameter("@.Mobile", oPerson.Mobile),

new OleDbParameter("@.Active", i)

);

return iHigh;

}

catch (Exception ex)

{

return 0;

//System.Reflection.MethodBase oExceptie = System.Reflection.MethodInfo.GetCurrentMethod();

//clsLogging.logException(1, "addInput: " + ex.Message, oExceptie);

}

}

|||

This helped

oPerson.DateTime.ToString("MM-dd-yyyy hh:mmTongue Tieds")

|||

I'm not sure what the definition is for "offline" system; but what about using SQL Server Express instead of Access?

|||

Then every client still has to run a server on their system .. don't they?

*edit: Anyway I 've succesfully implemented the access system already, just stuck now with how use it once distributed with Click Once. Don't know how to setup my Connectionstring for the local db.

|||

You mean an server operating system?

No, Express runs on XP(SP2) and Win2000 Pro (SP4)

|||But does the express edition act like a file or is it a running service? Because I can't ask for each client to install express on their system.|||

It runs as a service.

Sorry.

|||

That's what I thought, no worries.. glad I used the right way Smile

You don't know a solution for my connectionstring problem? Or how to copy a file with Clickonce to c:\\DB\ ..?

|||

Not much help to you there...haven't worked with Access in a number of years.

|||

It doesn't really have to do with access.. I just need to put the access mdb file to a location I know on the users system using the ClickOnce Deployment, putting it between the application files works but then the location of the file would be something like

Code Snippet

C:\Documents and Settings\Tobias\Local Settings\Apps\2.0\2LQGDKTN.0KN\J3WQXOLX.BGB\netw...exe_75bfb84bc0f378ec_0000.0009_en-gb_fc79dfd558e684a4

So basically not usuable in a connectionstring for a database.
