|||As stated in the link Dejan provided, you need a server OS to run Standard
Edition. However, the Developer Edition provides the same features as the
Enterprise Edition with licensing restrictions and can run on a client OS
like XP Pro.

limit. Windows 2000 server supports 4GB of memory. My
hardware supports two processors. If I license per
Processor method and install two processors and license
two Standard editions will there be 2GB of memory per
processor or 2GB for both processors?

You CANNOT install 64bit SQL Server on a 32bit OS. (Well, there is a messy possibility -but you really don't want to...)

You CANNOT install Itanium SQL Server on a non Itanium OS (either 32bit or 64 bit).

MS SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installation problem - Help!

During installation, I get a warning message that the hardware doesn't meet minimum requirement. But I'm running it on a laptop with 30 gigs of free space and running Windows XP home edition.

When I click on install anyway, I end up getting an error message that I need a "sqlncli.msi" file that can't be found.

Could it be because I have both 2.0 NET and 3.0 NET installed?

What Edition of SQL Server 2005 are you attempting to install?

As you can see from the chart at this reference, only Developers' Edition and SQL Server Express will install on XP Home -and only if XP Home is Service Pack 2 (SP2).

I tried to download the sqlncli.msi file (second link), but got an error message saying that it can't be read?!?

Not really sure what to look for in the first link. In your opinion, what tends to be the usual culprit? I have a Toshiba Tecra from late 2005 and I'm running IE7.

Are you installing this on 64 bits machine? In Beta2, SQL Server Express on a 64 bit machine is not supported.

The followings are further details :-

1. The installer name is en_vs_2005_std_dvd_beta2.iso 2,991,258KB size

2. Installed machine is Pentium 4 2.8Mhz 32 bit machin, there are not selection buttons to choose during installing the above for 32 bits or 64 bits machine. Could it be the installer package install vs advance edition for 64 bits or other errors.

3 This is a clean installation without any previous version of vs2005 except that I have install sql 2005 beta 3 although unsucessfully due to Setup configuration check cannot be executed due to WMI configuration
on the computer G:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Binn\etwcls.mof.
For details, see the Sqlrunxx.log file or call Microsoft Product Support.
4. The file size of 7.6 GB may be insufficient because the window 2003 standard after all the installer are 3.6 GB. When I add the vs2005 beta 2 it is an addition of 3.5GB. What is the recommended harddisk size for both the standard version and team suite ?

I have successfully install another package available from msdn name en_vs_2005_team_suite_dvd_beta2.iso 3,934,154KB. for the express 2005 april ctp version plus msdn .

Can anyone confirmed that only this version can be used for 32 bit machine while the others installer are for 64 bits so call advanced edition of visual studio 2005.

TrintNot sure about the version you are talking about. Is it the developers
version? There are very few differences between versions. Most differences
is not the report itself but other things like data driven subscriptions. A
report is the same between versions.
The main issue with SQL Server Express Reporting Services is not the report
you designed but other limitations such as where the data resides. If you
data is in Express Edition then you are fine. If you are wanting to report
off of data on another SQL Server box then you will have problems.

If you are trying to do this over the internet then you need custom
authentication which is not express. You need at least workgroup.

No, you have to use SQL Turbo or build an inverted file index and query
that.
I would also advise you to check with your Microsoft contacts what their
plans are for SQL FTS integration with SQL Express.

MS SQL Server 2005 EE & MS SQL Server 2005 Express Manager

I recently installed SQL Server 2005 Express Edition CTP (It appears to be working fine). I then found the SQL Server 2005 Express Manager, and tried to load it, but I keep getting the error:

This computer must have at least Windows 2000 SP4 and the user must have administrator privileges in order to continue. Also, you must first install the SMO Components and the .NET Framework version 2.0.

Well, the machine is Windows XP Pro SP2 (fully patched), the account I am installing with is a member of the local admin group, my machine has both .Net framework 1.1 and 2.0 loaded (could this be the issue?). I guessed that installing 2.0 would upgrade 1.1. but that does not appear to be the case. I also went back and reinstalled SQL Server, unselected "Hide advanced configuration options", clicked on Client Components and selected "Entire feature will be installed on local hard drive", and finished the install. The docs I found on SQL 2005 indicate that this would install the SMO Components. Thus, I should have all of the bases covered, but the Express Manager install still errors out with the message above.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated,
JonLooking at the Product page for SQL Express, the Management App is not included with the CTP. To use it you are going to have to use the beta 2 version.

MS SQL Server 2005

Im trying to get started on MS SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/express/default.mspx) - is there any interface where I can create databases, tables etc ? Im used to MySQL and phpMyAdmin.

I cant get to decide between Windows authentication and SQL Server authentication when logging in - is there no root kinda login ?

Use Windows Authentication unless you have a reason to use mixed (SQL Server + Windows). Admins on the local computer will be members of the sysadmin role - can perform any operation (e.g. root access).
There is also a sa SQL Server logon that is a member of the sysadmin role - this is created regardless of the authentication type, but you can only use it if mixed mode authentication is enabled.

Windows - You are authenticated automatically based on your Windows/Domain user account.
SQL Server - You have to supply a username and password.|||Sorry, forgot to mention - it's possible to change the authentication mode after you have installed SQL Server. If you use mixed, be sure to use a strong password for the sa account - if you are developing applications, don't use the sa account in you application. Create another account with just enough permissions to perform its functions.|||Oh..it seems a new version of SQL Exp 2005 is out - with SP1 and with advanced services.

Im going to uninstall the current MS SQL Server 2005 Exp and install the one with advanced services.

Will SQL Server Management Studio Express work with the Advanced Services version ?|||I've not tried the advanced services version, but the management studio express is almost certain to work with it. Also, I suspect the install might include managment studio express rather than a seperate install - just a speculation...
