MS SQL Sever 7 to SQL Server 2005 Migration

Hi,
I would like to ask, is there any way i could migrate data on my SQL Server
7 to SQL Server 2005? Is there any available white paper or article regardin
g
this? Kindly refer one to me.
Thanks in advance. In upgrading from SQL 7 to SQL Server 2005 you have the option to perform
- in place upgrade (replace existing SQL, which is not best practices).
- side / by side upgrade (install an instance of SQL 2005 next to or on
another server)
- transfer databases using backup / restore
- transfer databases using Copy Database Wizard in SQL 2005
- transfer databases using attach /detach
- transfer logins / user defined error message / jobs ..using Copy
Database wizard or SQL Integration Services
On transfering data you will find a lot of interesting info on
www.microsoft.com/learning/sql which provides you with free e-learning on
SSIS.
(formerly known as DTS)
Have a look at SQL Upgrade Advisor (www.microsoft.com/sql) for a nice tool
that will analyze your SQL 2005.
Read all documents in there for know issues and migration issues.

MS SQL problems after host migration

My reseller web host (DIY) migrated a few weeks ago to a new data center.
Unfortunately, my MS SQL databases were not migrating properly. (as well as
other things). I have multiple sites that are not functional due to
problems with their migration.

When I looked at some of the databases, the table structure had been
migrated, but not the data and apparently something else.

Some of the databases of this error when trying to access it:
-- error --
Error for database: DATABASENAME
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error \'80040e37\'
Invalid object name \'TABLENAME\'.
-- end error--

Some of the databases I can actually access but get:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80040e2f'
Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'TABLENAME', table
'DATABASENAME.dbo.TABLENAME'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.
Everything in all databases worked perfectly before the migration.

They tell me that they have done what they can. They tell me that they are
at the mercy of Psoft who assisted with the migration.

Does anyone know of anything that can my host that can help them figure out
the problem.

Any assistance will be GREATLY appreciated.anybody have any ideas on this? My host still has not resolved this issue.

Thanks in advance.

MS SQL Migration From MS Access

Hi,

I am looking to move up from MS Access to MS SQL.

What is the maximum amount of fields allowed in a MS SQL Record?

In my Access database I have had to create a number of tables to hold the data. I would like to keep everything in one table for the MS SQL DB.

Is there any problems I should watch for regarding data types etc when I change over.

Many Thanks

Darrell...One record on SQL Server cannot keep more than 8060 bytes - of course you can use text fields, but they are not so convenient.
Question is - what kind of database do you have? OLTP, warehouse or something else? Do you need to normalize your data or denormalize?|||Hi,

I believe I am looking at a normalised access database, that I want to migrate from.

The data is currently split across 5 tables, using refrential integrity with primary key the unique id for each record.

With the 8060 bytes of data, is that just adding up the data type sizes for the maximum amount data fields or is there some kind of overhead to bear in mind?

Thanks

You can create table like this with warning that it is impossible to add record if total amount data is more than 8060 bytes:

create table mytable( id int
,code1 varchar(8000)
,code2 varchar(8000)
,code3 varchar(8000)
,code4 varchar(8000)
,code5 varchar(8000)
)

See BOL about data types.

MS SQL client not found for connect to local running server

Hi

I got this error when I try to install SSMAExtPack.exe that is required by SS Migration Assistant.

MS SQL client not found for connect to local running server

I got Sql server 2005 trivial version installed and SS Studio Express on my laptop, everything on one machine. Do I need to install MS SQL client? If so, where and how can I donwload it? Is it free trival version?

Thanks in advanced

Li

When you install SQL Server 2005, SQL Native Client(SNAC) will be installed automatically. Also, MDAC is part of Windows OS. So, you should not have this problem unless the machine is messed up.

Hi

Thanks.

Have anyone else got this problem?

|||

Yes i got the same problem. And my machine is not messed up.

Got all programs clean installed. VS .NET 2005 SQL Server developer 2005.

All programs working fine. But running SSMAExtPack.exe returns the described error.

|||Moving to tools, hope somebody knows what the issue is.|||Have you chosen to install client tools when Evaluation edition is select to install?|||

Hi,

When i install development software, i always do a full install, to prevent things from missing.

I do not run any evaluation software, but fully registered software. In order to resolve this

problem i tried to download and install the SQL Client components from Microsoft with no

result. The setup told me if i wanted to remove or repair the current installation, so my initial

installation was successfull. Tried selecting the repaire option did not do the trick.
